How to Find and Fix 404 Errors on Your Shopify Store

What Are 404 Errors and Why Do They Matter?

A 404 error appears when someone visits a URL on your store that doesn't exist. This happens when products are deleted, collections are renamed, or old links from social media or Google still point to pages that have moved.

For Shopify stores, 404 errors are more than just an annoyance — they cost you SEO rankings and lost sales when customers hit a dead end instead of a product page.

Step 1: Find Your 404 Errors

The fastest way to find broken links on your store is to use Google Search Console. Navigate to Coverage > Excluded > Not Found (404) to see a list of URLs Google has crawled that returned errors.

You can also use free tools like Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) or Ahrefs Webmaster Tools to crawl your site and surface broken internal and external links.

Step 2: Set Up URL Redirects in Shopify

Once you've identified broken URLs, fix them by creating redirects in your Shopify admin:

  1. Go to Online Store > Navigation > URL Redirects
  2. Click Create URL redirect
  3. Enter the old (broken) path in the "Redirect from" field
  4. Enter the correct destination URL in the "Redirect to" field
  5. Save and repeat for each broken URL

For stores with many redirects, you can import them in bulk via CSV.

Step 3: Customize Your 404 Page

Even after setting up redirects, some visitors will still land on your 404 page. Make it helpful: add a search bar, link to your top collections, and include a friendly message so visitors don't simply bounce.

Step 4: Monitor Regularly

Set a reminder to check Google Search Console for new 404 errors at least once a month. Staying on top of them prevents SEO damage from accumulating over time.
